MY LIFE IN THE PALISADES
I’m Derrek Benson, founder of Benson Design & Development Co. and I was given the great privilege to grow up in Pacific Palisades during the 70s. Coined the “Mayberry by the Sea”, the community was true to its name. I moved there in 3rd grade where I went and graduated from Corpus Christi Catholic School in 1978.
As children, the town was very safe, and everyone knew their neighbors. Kids could ride their bikes and the bus safely. My friends and I would grab on the local bus bumpers in town and hitch rides on our skateboards. I played local baseball with the Pacific Palisades Baseball Association at the central park and I had many great memories playing there with my friends.
After our games, we would gather at the Hot Dog Show restaurant to eat some “Chihuahua” dogs and were enchanted by the train that meandered around the ceiling. It was also in this special place that I found my love for surfing and hiking down from the Via De Las Olas bluff with longboards in hand. Although we might have unintentionally caused a ban on surfboards on local buses, those adventurous days are etched in my heart.
After 8th grade graduation, we moved to San Diego, I returned to the Palisades in 1989 to continue my education at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Santa Monica. Living with a childhood friend at the Tahitian Terrace trailer park right off Pacific Coast Highway during that time was a formative experience that shaped my dreams and aspirations. Growing up by the beach instilled in me a deep sense of wonder and adventure that I carry with me to this day.
My close friend and I had many more great times surfing Topanga Point, our home break, and enjoying many fun times eating at the Reel Inn Restaurant. Once you grow up by the beach, it will always be a part of you. I fondly remember my time in the Palisades, where the spirit of community and the breathtaking landscape continue to inspire my journey. I would be truly honored to help rebuild the town that gave me so much love and joy during my childhood.
